Hey I didn't see it on the list, but triclosan is also in Bath and Body Works Anti-Bacterial Moisturizing Hand Lotions . . . YIKES!

triclosan is the only effective treatment of an unknown skin condition that i have. its the only thing that works at keeping the outbreaks from spreading, that i have found so far.

I did a Google search on "triclosan" and from reading, apparently this info warnings have been out since as early as 2001. If our FDA and EPA report the dangers of this so-called chemical, then why are these products and others noted {Colgate, ...} STILL on the shelves?

Well, I completely realize people being concerned about breeding these "super bugs", but things can be carried too far. A little information is dangerous.
Did you know that triclosan is naturally in breast milk? Hmm... does this mean that breast milk should be banned? Of course not!
There are uses for which antimicrobial protection is a good thing. Triclosan used in its liquid form for hand soaps have been proven unnecessary. However, used in certain products, there are huge benefits.
Let's wake up, remain vigilant, and really get the facts before condemning something with very little information about it. If something which is outdoors has Microban in it where a bird or other animal may come in contact with it, I would want the protection. Would contracting bird flu, or something worse be better than the potential contact with a dried form of triclosan? No!
It's about time everyone accept responsibility for learning more about what they speak of. Otherwise, let others with the info get on the soapbox and spread the truth. Only then, can we all make educated decisions.
Triclosan in breast milk
Triclosan is not "naturally" in breast milk. It ends up in breast milk due to the mothers exposer and ingestion of it.
As you said, it's about time everyone eccept responsibility for learning more about what they speak of.

In this day & age where everything seems to be harmful, I think a little caution would work. After all, whatever is on the list has substitutes. There's no such one thing that we all cannot live without.
Triclosan in breastmilk
As a biologist, I felt compelled to point out that the study of triclosan in breastmilk (Sci Total Environ. 2006 Dec 15;372(1):87-93. Epub 2006 Sep 26) did not contend that it is naturally present there- rather, they found that some of the mothers were using, at home, products containing triclosan. Their triclosan concentration was greatest. The other mothers were probably encountering sources in their environments outside or unidentified sources within their homes. I don't believe there is any scientific contention that this substance is naturally produced by the human body, but there is evidence that it is harmful.

Triclosan
Triclosan is in breast milk because everyone has Triclosan in their tissues. It's used so widely and prevalently in everything a consumer uses, it causes cumulative amounts to gather in our bodies. It is toxic. Be vigilant when choosing products and product packaging.

Did you know that Cannibinoids are also present in breast milk being fed to newborns. Or body goes into shock from deprivation because marijuana is illegal for the most part still. Cannibinoids fight and kill many types of cancer, alhiemers, dementia, glaucoma, fight arthritus, help with nausa, pain, seizures post tramatic war syndrome, endometriosis, and many, Many other cures including depression, anxiety and insomnia. Do you think we are carrying this drug a little too far by classifying this natural plant that would reverse global warming as a stage 3 drug just as bad as method, crack n coke. Triclosan is found in most women's breast milk not because it's natural but because these women are heavily contaminated and it's being excreted in their body fluids!!! And bird flu is a VIRUS and is not destroyed by antibacterials because it's not a bacteria! You REALLY need to learn and understand ehat you are talking about. You're promoting a dangerous and destructive product based on flawed assumptions and a poor understanding of the science.

The love of money is the root of all evil
Traditional doctors (allopathic)advocate chemical reactions as the solution to all human maladies. These are the same doctors whom in the 1800's got a bad reputation for using gadgets that did not work to treat those with illness. Therefore, their assumption is not backed up by modern society. It is just a drug that fools you that you are not sick but ultimately the side effects 95 percent of the time leave you dead sooner than you would have been if you left it alone.
It is like the majority treatment of cancer where you feed it poison (Chemotherapy and radiation). You never get it out of your body and your life is shortened whether you survive or not. Very few do survive.
These treatments and drugs are much cheaper than natural treatments and the manufacturers make tons of money and could care less about any of us and the true facts. They even convince themselves normally to use the drugs because I have lots of money and I am invincible.

I think you go too far. 95 percent of drugs are not ineffective or worse than their side effects. And life is a series of chemical reactions. Medical practices from 200 years ago do not invalidate clinically proven methods of modern medicine. Modern medical practices are not perfect but they are the best shot you have if seriously ill. I just had an infected wisdom tooth and i can tell you there is no plant that would have worked like the antibiotics and novicane the dentist gave me. Without them and the soon to come oral surgery i would be dead in a few months from blood poisioning. I dont take medication for minor ailments and rarely go to the doctor but you go too far in your distrust. The money tied to healthcare care and pharmacy is the real problem not the science.
let me advise
as an herbalist and a naturopathic doctor here in Philippines, to treat infected gums and tooth, simply grate avocado seed and place it on the affected parts for few minutes until the pain will stop. this will work almost instant. we have lot of herbs here in oil form to treat the same. smile.. The best medicine is in the nature..

Triclosan
I've used Syderma lotion for years and being a redhead, my skin is especially thin and vulnerable to cuts. This lotion has helped my cuts heal quickly. I was a pet sitter for 20 years and always getting little cuts on my hands. Syderma helped keep infections away. i'm an RN, BTW. Sometimes chemicals improve life.

I don't think it was Triclosan that made your cuts heal quickly. Also, I am sorry to be the one to tell you that being an RN does not make you an authority on safe and unsafe chemicals. Chemicals don't just sometimes improve our lives, they do it on a nearly daily bases, but that does not mean that all chemicals in products are safe for us. I choose to live with as few harmful chemicals in and on my body as possible.

Triclosan is the only trmt. I have found for the scalp build up and hair loss I have had since exposed to molds that have devestated my health. In desperation I applied it to my scalp even though it was the active ingred. in Clearasil face wash and it seems to have helped trememdously. Maybe I won't loose all my hair now.

What about their hand sanitizers and hand soap that so many of us use? Do they contain triclosan as well?
Try Jergen's Extra Moisturizing Hand Wash!
Jergen's Extra Moisturizing Hand Wash is one of the original liquid soaps, dating back many years — a classic, if you will. It features a cherry-almond sent — the same scent Jergen's uses in their Original body lotion formula. What I personally like, too, is the extremely silky texture and the excellent lather (better than the pricey bath/body store brands). It does not contain Triclosan. Thanks to the ubiquity of the Soft Soap brand, however, it is becoming difficult to find in stores. I have found it on Drugstore.com and also on Amazon and, more sporadically, in some dollar stores. I would suggest asking your local grocer or drugstore to carry it. It is not only a fantastic soap but an excellent value for the money compared to many other brands.
Jergens
I was raised using Jergens lotion and it is still a favorite of mine. It pays to read labels and search the internet for an explanation of what they are.

The cherry almond scent is from a synthetically derived chemical. Scented products are a source of hidden chemicals and dangerous phthalates. Use organic almond or coconut oil for your skin. Wise to stay away from any store bought product with preservatives, artificial colors, dyes, etc.
Other Toxins and Irritants in Jergen's Extra Moist Hand Wash
Doing some digging, I find that old recipes such as this one still contain Parabens and chemicals to disinfect and such (last two ingredients on the label). At least three of these ingredients that are laboratory made can be substituted with tea-tree oil. It is also somewhat of an irritant in and of itself but it's an all natural anti-fungal, anti-microbial/ disinfectant and 6 times more soothing than Aloe. It's also not carcinogenic. Parabens can be linked to some cancers, female type in particular. Fragrance, if not introduced by natural oils, is also, usually, a propreitary "secret" blend of items not listed that have no data either way so I'd say it's best to avoid products like that as well. We've been raised to trust names like Proctor & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson and these big industry players, over the decades has been slowly, systematically poisoning everyone. Other countries aren't accepting products like these unless formulas are altered to meet their restrictive guidelines.

Bath and Body Works has reformulated all their liquid hand soap and they are no longer having triclosan in them. (as of 2014)
Triclosan in Deodorant
I just purchased Arm & Hammer's Essentials natural deodorant. Although it is paraben and aluminum free it does contain triclosan.

try more natural deodorant such as put a little coconut oil on finger tips and sprinkle with small amount of baking soda and rub into armpit. It works for me
Try an even easier natural deodorant
Just splash on some natural apple cider vinegar. You smell the vinegar for only a couple minutes. It works for many people, keeping them smell-free all day.
another option for deodorant
I have had sensitive skin all my life and haven't been able to use antiperspirant for years - I'd break out in a rash. I read on another site about using unflavored milk of magnesia and sure enough it works great for me. It doesn't stop you from sweating but keeps the smell down better than any natural deodorant I've found.
Harmless Deodorant
I use bicarbonate of soda and cornstarch in equal amounts. mixed up in a box and after washing with unscented soap and water, under my arms, instead of a commercial deodorant.As yet I don't seem to suffer from Body odour.
I was about to order another
I was about to order another pack of 4 of this Arm and Hammer natural deodorant and found out on another website that it contains triclosan. Have been using it for 2 years now. My son also uses this one. We will have to look for different one.
It's good to be informed
It's good to be informed through a *variety* of google web articles and form your own opinions and react accordingly. (Another site reported that the Canadian govt attempted to ban triclosan last year.) I stumbled across the topic in researching a horrible rash on my hands. It would start to go away and then come back. Even the gentlest unscented handcreams would burn. I had to use olive oil & socks at night. I now believe it's the triclosan antibacterial soap in the restrooms at work (installed in response to H1N1 and avoiding staff sick leave. :)) I smelled the soap and it is horrible! Burned my nose and made my eyes water. Can't believe I never noticed it before. The rash is spreading up my wrists, although not where my watch band is. So I've switched to method handsoap (target) - triclosan-free. Personally, I think the less ingested and *absorbed* chemicals, the better. At one time people thought lead in paint, asbestos shingles and highly flamable pj's for kids was a good idea. Research and form your own opinions....

i have been using Old Spice High Endurance deodrant for years and have never seen Triclosan mentioned on the packaging.

The Old Spice High Endurance deodorant DOES CONTAIN TRICLOSAN as stated on the back of the 'red only' container, 3.25 oz , bar code 12044 34220 . Old Spice does not list this product according to the spokes person I called to check this product. I'm tossing it ! Their other products did not list it on the container.

Been using it for years also, because it's not an antiperspirant but now I read this but I don't see Triclosan listed as an ingredient....? They say Triclosan can go by other names, if so? Can Dr. Ben Kim tell us which ingredient in this Old Spice is the Triclosan? Thank you.

With the importance of this topic, it sure would be nice to find a definitive source for the other names for Triclosan, in order to check whether it is a product ingredient, but under another name.
Thomasville Furniture
I contacted Thomasville Furniture and they told me that Triclosan is not used in any of their products except possibly in health care contracts where some of their chair fabrics must resist germs. Just make sure you all check your sources before avoiding all products put out by companies who may be named on this list.

Actually ALL dial soap has triclosan, even if it does not show up on the list on ingredients.

So after reading the posts I noticed the comments about dial soap. I got both a white and yellow bar of dial soap out and looked at the outer packaging and no mention of triclosan. Then I looked on the actual bar packaging and found that they have listed; Triclocarban 0.3%. My question is that the same as triclosan or a derivitive of it?

if anyone is looking for a hand sanitizer that does NOT contain triclosan, there is one by BabyGanics called "The Germinator". it's a foaming hand sanitizer, and doesn't contain triclosan.
So what is better?
Suppose that we establish and confirm that triclosan, a chemical found in everyday household handsoap, is toxic. What then should we use as a safer alternative? Is chloroxylenol any better in my hand soap? Should I stick to more natural methods that contain vinegar or lemon? Perhaps I should stop washing my hands altogether if everything kills me. Triclosan could have caused a medical condition that involves uncontrolled cell growth. I used the body wash and hand soaps for years. I didn't suspect anything.

Studies have shown ordinary hand soap removes almost all bacteria any way if used correctly. There really is no need for antibacterial hand soap except in very stringent conditions such as clinician or surgeon.
It's the friction in
It's the friction in cleansing hands that remove/loosen the majority of bacteria, and the water to rinse it away. We have survived many years without antimacrobial products, nothing beats good handwashing technique....
Triclosan-free Option
Midwest Sanitizing offers a triclosan-free hand sanitizer. And it won't dry out your hands because it's also alcohol-free. They also sell soaps and disinfectants.
And in every non-metal dish rack I've found!
The brand name (not triclosan) is proudly displayed on every one of these dish racks, and on many other household items, things that are treated "to keep bacteria away". Bacteria will not stay away; it will just adapt. Killing doesn't work on the micro scale, either...
