Eight Of The Best Foods For Your Health
Here is a list of eight of the healthiest foods you can eat:
Leafy Greens
Romaine lettuce, red leaf and green leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, collards, Swiss chard, turnip greens, and bok choy provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals, particularly folate, vitamin B6, iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Leafy greens are also high in several different antioxidants and chlorophyll, which help to lower the risk of cancer, heart disease, macular degeneration, and cataracts.
Broccoli
Broccoli contains indoles and sulforaphane, both cancer-fighting substances. Broccoli is a healthy source of fibre, folate, vitamin C, vitamin K, calcium, coenzyme Q10, and carotenoids. The nutrients found in broccoli make it a great food for building healthy bones and protecting against birth defects and cataracts.
Avocado
Avocado provides high quality fat, essential to keeping your cells healthy and strong. It's also a good source of vitamin C, folate, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin E, fibre, and potassium. Avocado is also an excellent source of lutein, an antioxidant that helps to promote healthy eyes, skin, and blood vessels. Finally, avocado is a good source of glutathione, one of the most important antioxidants to your health.
Blueberries
One of my personal favourites, blueberries provide antioxidants, natural anti-inflammatory compounds, fibre, folate, niacin, magnesium, iron, riboflavin, and salicylic acid. Blueberries are excellent for preventing cardiovascular disease, cancer, cataracts, and macular degeneration. If you have problems associated with regulating your blood sugar and insulin levels, it is important to limit your consumption of blueberries to about a cup per day.
Pomegranates
Ounce for ounce, pomegranates are one of the most concentrated, healthy food sources of antioxidants. They are also lower in sugar than many other fruits, making them a good choice for optimal blood sugar and insulin levels.
Coconut
Like avocado, coconut is an excellent source of healthy, raw fat, much of it saturated. Saturated fat helps to impart strength to your cell membranes. The fatty acids in coconut are easily used for energy and can help to speed up metabolism. Coconut is high in lauric acid, which helps to promote healthy intestinal flora.
Walnuts
Walnuts are an excellent source of protein, fibre, potassium, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. They promote healthy blood chemistry and reduce the risk of heart attack, diabetes, and cancer.
Organic Eggs
Organic eggs are power packed with healthy protein and fat, vitamins A, D, B12, B2, niacin, and folate. They also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Organic eggs provide choline, a nutrient that is essential to normal cell structure and function and proper signalling between regular cells and nerve cells.
Cod Liver Oil
Although not technically a whole food, cod liver oil is the best single source of vitamin A, vitamin D, and two long chain fatty acids called EPA and DHA. These nutrients promote and support:
- A strong and healthy cardiovascular system, particularly a healthy heartbeat and clean blood circulation
- A healthy brain and nervous system, especially important if you suffer from depression or other emotional disorders
- Excellent night vision
- A balanced and strong immune system
- Strong bones and teeth
- Healthy joints, particularly helpful if you suffer with arthritis
- Healthy skin and mucosal linings, including the lining of your digestive tract
