Low Carb Wrap Ideas

Untitled

Once we pass the age of 40, our greatest risks of disease and death are various forms of cancer and cardiovascular disease.  From the standpoint of what we eat, the most impactful thing we can do to reduce our risk of both is to minimize intake of sugar and other highly refined carbohydrates.

To reduce regular intake of bread, I suggest substituting with various leafy vegetables.  Steamed green cabbage leaves are an excellent choice as they keep their form better than leafy greens and have a natural sweetness that goes well with most sandwich fillings.

I also enjoy using perilla (sesame) leaves as an alternative sandwich wrap as shown above - they are abundant in calcium and have a uniquely pleasing fragrance, something of a mild cross between mint and basil.  Perilla leaves are readily available in Korean food stores throughout summer months.  They go equally well with regular burgers, grilled portobello mushrooms, and other plant-based patties.
