Emotional Health and Well-Being

Our Parents

If you arrived at this page looking for a letter that was written to my friend David, I'm very sorry to let you know that regrettably, it's no longer available.

The letter was intended to lend support to our friends in an anonymous way, and my hope was that those who could relate to the experience of having a difficult relationship with their parents during their upbringing would be comforted in knowing that many others share this experience and still feel a strong sense of compassion for their parents. It Gets Better

Heartfelt thanks to those who are doing all they can to prevent more suicides due to bullying of gays, lesbians, and all others who are treated inhumanely because of differences.

I could write for days on this, but instead, I ask that you watch the following videos and share them with those who may need support. Read more

An Open Letter To A Memorable Gawker

Do you remember when you first noticed my freakish appearance while I was in line at the merry-go-round with my boys? Pardon the cliche - you couldn't take your eyes off me. But credit to you for keeping your head pointed straight ahead as you maintained your gawk with a sideways stare as you walked by. Read more

Deep In An Ancient Hawaiian Forest

If you're a believer in taking some time each day to meditate, pray, or simply relax on a lushly padded yoga mat to help restore peace and balance within, I hope that the following instrumental tracks from "The Descendants" are helpful to your sessions. I've been listening to these tracks for a few weeks now and I simply cannot get enough of them. Read more

Six Ways to Keep Your Relationship Healthy

Updated on October 21, 2012

As a follow-up to a previous post on Six Questions to Ponder in Choosing a Life Partner, I thought it would be helpful to create a post where our readers can chime in with thoughts on how to sustain a life partnership once you're all in.

Clearly, all relationships face their own unique challenges. I've been around long enough to believe that sometimes, it may be best for two grossly mismatched personalities to end a long term relationship and begin anew the quest for a mostly peace-filled life. Read more

What Is Bullying?

Being a health care provider and educator, I've met all sorts of people who are passionate about healthy eating. My experience has been that most people looking to improve and maintain their health through optimal food choices and a balanced lifestyle have good intentions and seek to be healthy so that they can enjoy being alive. Time to Unplug

About two and a half years ago, I ditched my reservations on regular cell phone use and joined the masses in getting a smartphone, an iPhone 3GS for those who know about these things.

The idea was to have an easy way to stay connected via e-mail to those I work with while I was away from my desk. I thought it would be helpful to make instant voice recordings of new tasks and article ideas that came to mind. And I was attracted to the thought of having an always-ready GPS. Read more

Trust

If there's a truly must-see film for all parents and children who are about 10 and older, this is it. I stumbled upon "Trust," directed by David Schwimmer, at our library the other day and barely blinked through this story of a good family that is devastated by their 14-year old daughter falling prey to an online pedophile.

Please have a look at the trailer here: Read more

One Antidote for Seething and Trembling

Over the holidays, we had a chance to visit some old friends at their new Mixed Martial Arts facility just north of Toronto. We had a great time catching up while our boys tore up their massive gym (there's just something that works about letting kids loose in a wide open space covered with premium gym mats). Read more

Nurturing Creativity

I've long been a believer in the idea that all of us are born to be creative artists. Playing music, drawing, acting, dancing, writing, designing, building, even playing sports at a high level - when we nurture our creative instincts through any of these artistic experiences, we stand a good stance of feeling deeply fulfilled, and we almost certainly add value to other people's lives.
